In 2008, studies revealed the devastating statistic that 240,000 individuals are living with HIV in the Caribbean. As a unified community, it is our responsibility to help find methods to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among our friends, families and neighbors. Do you ever wonder what you can do to help? Do you know where to go to find more information?
National Caribbean-American HIV/AIDS Day is dedicated to promoting the education of sexual health practices needed to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Caribbean. The day’s purpose not only encourages everyone to participate in events on June 8th, but throughout the year. Although this day is directed to focus on issues of sexual health in the Caribbean, it is important to recognize that HIV/AIDS does not have any boundaries and can affect anyone. Thus, our strides to promote awareness of the fight against HIV/AIDS on June 8th are part of a larger effort to continuously educate individuals on the importance of this wide-reaching issue.
On this day, numerous organizations throughout the country and world will hold events to provide health education, HIV/AIDS awareness, and HIV testing within their communities. We ask everyone to take time to participate in these events. A list of events in you area can be found at NCAHAAD Events.
It’s the leaders and volunteers that participate in these events that make the increases in global sexual health awareness possible. Volunteers of numerous races, cultures, and age groups are welcome to the cause. As we continue to grow, we hope that you will choose to contribute to our fight against an epidemic that is pervasive across the world.
